The Voice of Vlaanderen Season 2: Top 16 Highlights

A withdrawal shocked the series this week as one of the contestants had to leave the competition for medical issues. Said contestant was replaced by one of it's team mates, to not so good results. This week, three new entries freshen things up, as nine contestants make a lasting impression, advancing to the next round.

Lauren Zweegers
Unfortunately,
Lauren has been forced by her doctors to leave the competition.
Apparently, she has a vocal chord cyst, thus she won't be able to sing
since she'll need an operation. It's really awful that this is happening
to her since she's one of the best this year. Hopefully she recovers
and is able to come back to the competition next year. Kaat Verschueren
replaced her, something I would've been ok with a week before. More on

"Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart" (Dusty Springfield) - Team Alex Callier - 5/10 - Eliminated -
Unfortunately, Kaat's rushed "Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart"
cover was anything but a hit. After all, poor thing only have mere days
to prepare her performance. Not only her delivery was a mess, but her
look was also extremely messy. Did she miss her appointment with the
hairstylist to rehearse cause it certainly didn't feel like she did? - VIDEO
Matthijs Vanstaen
"Black and Gold" (Sam Sparro) - Team Jasper Steverlinck - 6/10 - Through to the Top 16 -
I heard Ellie Goulding's version of this song before hearing the
original so each time I heard a cover of it I compare it to Ellie's.
Matthijs' cover didn't live up to the challenge. I've no idea what
happened to the singer because this isn't the artist we've been seeing
so far. His performance felt out of character, he was on pitch but it
did felt shouty to me. It wasn't him. - VIDEO
Domien Cnockaert
"How can we hang on to a dream" (Tim Hardin) - Team Jasper Steverlinck - 7/10 - Through to the Top 16 - Yet another emotional slow song for Domien. He's playing the piano tonight and while it's all very pretty, his take didn't go anywhere. I was expecting his voice to have a moment and start cracking with emotion but that never happened. Either way, his tone is wonderful and I'll never get tired of it. - VIDEO
Maria Theresa Morales
"Eternal flame" (The Bangles) - Team Koen Wauters - 7,5/10 - Through to the Top 16 - I almost included her "Grenade" cover from the previous round but something about it didn't feel right to me. That has all gone away with her gorgeous delivery of this beautiful song. Her vocals were phenomenal and I couldn't spot a single flaw. However, perfection comes with a price and hers was any emotional connection with the song she was singing. She should have gone deeper within and unfortunately she didn't. - VIDEO
Jelle Degens
"Laura" (Bat for Lashes) - Team Alex Callier - 7,5/10 - Through to the Top 16 -
His "Pumped Up Kicks" from a week before was atrocious. I've no idea how
he managed to make it through. I'm glad he did though cause I'd have
never heard his amazing tone otherwise. The performance was a bit flat
but his terrific original sound was one of the highlights of the night. -

Olivier De Laet
"Sexy and I know it" (LMFAO) - Team Alex Callier - 8/10 - Through to the Top 16 - Truth be told, he looked - and sounded - silly while performing this song but there was something highly entertaining about it. His dancing was a high point, his faces another one. Olivier's voice has got a very appealing rasp, and a very strong one, so it was nice to see him approach such a fun song with that deep growl, it was an interesting combination. - VIDEO
Paulien Mathues
"Delay" (Intergalactic Lovers) - Team Jasper Steverlinck - 8/10 - Through to the Top 16 - A lot different from her previous outing. This tune, which by the way, I've never heard before, has a lot more tempo than her previous choice and while her quirky tone wasn't as perfect as the week before, her delivery was so entertaining and unique it didn't matter. Her almost whistle-y bird-like notes were breathtaking. - VIDEO
Jaouad Alloul
"All the lovers" (Kylie Minogue) - Team Alex Callier - 8/10 - Through to the Top 16 - If Maria's performance lacked with emotion, Jaouad's was overflowing with it, it almost felt as a sugar overdose. Being serious, he's got the smoothest tone out of this year finalists and he's got a lot of control over his voice. That crack he had towards the end showed how much he was feeling the performance. I wish he had opened his eyes more, I'd have liked to see his soul. - VIDEO
Jana De Valck
"Beneath Your Beautiful" (Emeli Sandé) - Team Natalia Druyts - 8/10 - Through to the Top 16 - She's our resident pop princess so it's no wonder she was given such a popular song. Fortunately, it's one were she's not dancing but just singing. Her voice sounds really pretty on this song and while she may not have the most distinctive tone, there's something very compelling about her, maybe the fact that she acts and sounds like a star. I hope Natalia is able to bring that original something out of her. - VIDEO

"Limit to Your Love" (James Blake) - Team Koen Wauters - 10/10 - Through to the Top 16 -
I've never pictured this song sang this way. A mix between jazz, soul
and Blake's dubstep, best of both worlds. Perfect vocals, outstanding
tone and a wonderful arrangement, it doesn't get any better than this if
you ask me. Easily one of the best performances of the night, if not of
the season. I was in awe from beginning to end, I hope it had never
finished. - VIDEO
